Parents of Prospective Participants
Unless your child has the motivation to
call me and send in an application, I discourage
you from enrolling your son or daughter. These adolescents/young adults usually
dropout or participate half-heartedly. Successful participants must be
committed to hard work.
A child that is suicidal, intentionally self-injuring, bulimic, abusing
alcohol/drugs or severely depressed
is overwhelming. The parents contacting me are usually desperate for a
solution. There is no single fix for your son or daughter.
Your child is going to have to find their own motivation.
You can spend a lot of money trying to fix someone who is not ready to change.
Often parents feel like they can't stand their child's behavior anymore.
Their need for their child to change is often part of the problem. I suggest that you learn skills to help you
stay calm during the next time you don't think you can stand it anymore. Therapists who work with suicidal or
self-harming clients use DBT skills to keep themselves calm with difficult
clients. I would be happy to help you learn to de-escalate your emotions
during crises |
